Olvera Street - where the City of Los Angeles began

mural at the entrance to El Pueblo Historic District Across from the entrance to Union Station is Olvera Street and La Placita, the birthplace of Los Angeles and the heart of the El Pueblo Historic Monument.

This mural is in a plaza at the entrance where, on weekends, you will very likely see people dancing. Feel free to join in!

Shops at Olvera Street Los Angeles Olvera Street was the main street of the original settlement of Nuestra Senora Reina de Los Angeles--better known now as Los Angeles.

Over two centuries later--continuously occupied--it has become a shopping attraction for tourists--with several cultural features, including historic homes to tour for free.

Ceramic peppers Olvera Street The stalls that line Olvera Street are filled with souvenirs for tourists, like these ceramic chiles. The food is of similar quality.
Cooking facilities Avila Adobe The entire Avila adobe home has been restored to original condition to show what living was like among affluent Angelenos in the 1800s.

Entry is through a narrow walkway about half-way along Olvera Street.  Free admission.

Our Lady Queen of the Angels church Now known as La Placita church, this historic church was originally called Our Lady Queen of the Angels, the name now used for the Cathedral a few blocks away.  This church was founded in 1871 on the site of a previous church.
two girls at la placita church La Placita is still an active local parish and you may come across a wedding party in the plaza.  Or a church service may be in progress.
